International team of scientists  managed to  find clues on the cause of  macular  degeneration  with age  which  is a major cause of vision loss in people aged 50 years and over.

Macular degeneration with age (age-related macular degenaration / AMD) is a chronic disease that occurs when the macula, the part of the retina which acts as a central sight, were damaged due to age. As a result, vision becomes blurred in the middle or even blind spots appear (blind spots).

This disease affects 1 of 50 people aged over 50 years and 1 in 5 people aged over 85 years. It is not yet clearly known triggers, but there are some risk factors ie smoking, high blood pressure and heredity.

Scientists whose research is reported in the journal Nature found an enzyme called DICER1 in the eye that stops working so that trigger disease AMD.

DICER1 enzyme is known to less active in the retina of people who suffer from dry eye. Later known DICER1 very important to destroy the small genetic material called RNA Alu. Without DICER1, Alu RNA would accumulate to toxic and lead to retinal damage.

Macular degeneration is characterized by the need for brighter light when doing close work. Writing newspaper into small pieces and street signs may also be more difficult to read. Some things that were supposed to look straight also will appear twisted or warped.
